HC Deb 21 July 1977 vol 935 cc658-9W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what representations he has made to the United States Government following the rises in air freight charges from Prestwick to the United States of America from 27p to 55p per kilo for textile exports; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The increase in the air freight charges results from the rejection of British Airways' contract cargo rates and specific commodity rates by the United States Civil Aeronautics Board, which has obtained court orders requiring British Airways to withdraw these rates. Strong representations have been made to the United States Government that the appropriate rates to be charged should be resolved by intergovernmental agreement. We intend to pursue this matter in accordance with the provisions of the tariffs article in the new air services agreement.
