asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the charge to the Defence Vote of maintaining United Kingdom forces in Northern Ireland in each of the last 10 years up to 1976–77.

The estimated extra cost of military operations in Northern Ireland for the years since 1969 are as follows:

1969–70 £1½ million
1970–71 £6½ million
1971–72 £14 million
1972–73 £29 million
1973–74 £33 million
1974–75 £45 million
1975–76 £60 million
1976–77 £65 million
