§ Mr. Newtonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people would benefit if the means-tested element in the age allowance was abolished; and what proportion would be basic-rate taxpayers.
§ Mr. Robert Sheldon, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 18th July 1977], gave the following reply
About 680,000, of whom 80 per cent. would be basic rate taxpayers.
