asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many civil servants in his Department of the rank of principal (or equivalent) and above are graduates of Oxford and Cambridge universities; and how many are graduates of other universities.

Of the 363 staff in my Department of the rank of principal, or equivalent, and above, 39 are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge, 85 hold degrees from other universities and four are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge and of another university. The remaining 235 are non-graduates. In addition, there are 709 staff in these ranks who provide a common service to my

Department and to the Department of the Environment. Of these, 73 are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge, 370 hold degrees from other universities and 24 are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge and of another university. The remaining 242 are non-graduates.

The Permanent Secretary and one of the two deputy secretaries are Oxford graduates. Common services to my Department and that of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment are provided by four groups of staff each headed by a deputy secretary. All four deputy secretaries are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge.
