NIMROD AIRFRAMES AND THE AEW VARIANT

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What Nimrod airframes are to be used for the manufacture of the AEW variant; and how many MR Nimrods are to be withdrawn from service for this purpose.

Eleven Maritime Reconnaissance Nimrod airframes will be converted to the AEW role. These aircraft would have become surplus to requirements following the decision, announced in the 1975 Statement on the Defence Estimates, to reduce the Nimrod maritime patrol force by a quarter.
