§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average payment of income tax made by wage and salary earners in the year 111W 1973–74; and what estimate he has made of the average payment in the current financial year.
§ Mr. Robert Sheldon,pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 29th June 1977; Vol. 934, c. 235], gave the following information:
The estimate below is based on figures contained in the survey of personal incomes. This does not include most low earners who are not liable to tax but includes persons paying tax who are in employment for only a part of the year.
The average payment of income tax made by wage and salary earners in 1973–74 was £350 and in 1977–78 is estimated to be £810. Wage and salary earners are taken to be all those whose total income contains some employment income.
