HL Deb 05 July 1977 vol 385 cc333-4WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Nature Conservancy Council have now given their views on the adequacy of existing legislation relating to the banning of imports on ecological grounds; whether they will summarise the Council's views and suggestions on the need to increase the Government's powers; and whether they will introduce any necessary measures during the next Session of Parliament.

Baroness BIRK

The Nature Conservancy Council are still considering the complex issues raised by imports of nonnative species and have not yet reached a conclusion on what advice they should give about the adequacy of the existing legislation. It is therefore too early to say when any necessary measures will be introduced.
