Lord CHELWOODasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether the Nature Conservancy Council have now given their views on the adequacy of existing legislation relating to the banning of imports on ecological grounds; whether they will summarise the Council's views and suggestions on the need to increase the Government's powers; and whether they will introduce any necessary measures during the next Session of Parliament.

§ Baroness BIRKThe Nature Conservancy Council are still considering the complex issues raised by imports of nonnative species and have not yet reached a conclusion on what advice they should give about the adequacy of the existing legislation. It is therefore too early to say when any necessary measures will be introduced.
