§ Mr. Kinnockasked the Secretary of State for Wales what representations he has received about the proposed closure of the Prince of Wales Orthopaedic Hospital, Rhydlafar; what consideration has been given to the proposal that it should become a regional orthopaedic hospital; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Barry JonesThe hospital action committee, several hon. Members and others have drawn attention to the excellent work done at the hospital and have urged the retention of the existing surgical unit and team. The South Glamorgan Health Authority will consider a report on the condition of the hospital premises and the possible need to provide alternative facilities at its October meeting. Any subsequent proposal to close the hospital would be the subject of full public consultation. Orthopaedic surgery is practised widely throughout Wales and no need is seen to designate a regional centre for this speciality.
