HC Deb 04 July 1977 vol 934 c413W
Mr. Robin F. Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many treatments by electro-convulsive therapy are received on average by mental health patients who are given such therapy; under what circumstances death is ascribed to such treatment; and what information he has on the professions and occupations of those presently receiving electro-convulsive therapy.

Mr. Moyle

I would refer my hon. Friend to my replies to my hon. Friend the Member for Southampton, Test (Mr. Gould) on 17th March and 27th May. [Vol. 928, c.261; Vol. 932, c. 694–5.] Whether death is associated with such treatment is a matter for the medical practitioners who certified the death, and, where appropriate, the coroner. Information on the professions and occupations of those presently receiving ECT is not available centrally.
