asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many children are in care in the Basildon parliamentary constituency, and the Essex County Council area; and how these figures compare with the position 12 months ago.

At 31st March 1976 there were 1,861 children in the care of Essex County Council compared with 1,752 at 31st March 1975. Comparable information for Basildon parliamentary constituency is not available.
