Mr. Watkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many nursery places there are in Gloucestershire;

(2) what is the number of nursery places in Gloucestershire as a percentage of the number of children between the ages of 3 and 5 years;

(3) how many nursery places there are in Tewkesbury District Council, Forest of Dean, Stroud District Council and Gloucester District Council, respectively.

There are no nursery places in occupation in Gloucestershire in January 1977.

(2) what is the number of nursery places in the United Kingdom as a percentage of the number of children between the ages of 3 and 5 years.

In January 1976 there were some 115,000 full-time equivalent nursery places in occupation at maintained schools in England and Wales. The number of under-fives in attendance either full-time or part-time was about 180,000 and this figure represents about 12.3 per cent. of the population aged 3 and 4 years.
