§ Mr. Peter Bottomleyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will publish an annual report from the Voluntary Services Unit;
(2) if he will make a statement on the work of the Voluntary Services Unit.
§ Mr. JohnThe Voluntary Services Unit is the Home Office division which advises on matters arising from our350W general responsibility for voluntary organisations. Its work includes acting as a channel of communication between voluntary organisations and Government departments, co-ordinating the Government response to voluntary organisations, encouraging voluntary effort, and making grants to organisations of national significance whose work spans the interests of a number of Government departments and /or does not fall within the responsibility of any individual department. Lists of the grants made by the Voluntary Services Unit are published from time to time but an annual report on the unit's day to day administrative work would be inappropriate.
