Mr. Baker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will estimate the total number of staff in the Inland Revenue that would be saved if there were self-assessment for Schedule D taxpayers.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 18th January 1977; Vol. 924, c. 109], gave the following information:

I regret that it is not possible to make an estimate without some indication of the terms on which such a system would operate, including a judgment of the extent of the auditing of returns and payments which the Inland Revenue would need to do.
