HC Deb 21 January 1977 vol 924 c365W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied that the train carrying nuclear waste material from Bradwell and travelling through Brentwood presents no danger to the public, that the material if stolen would present no hazard and that the derailment of the train would not be hazardous to the residents of the area.

Mr. William Rodgers

All radioactive material, including fuel elements, is transported in flasks designed and moved in accordance with internationally agreed standards which take into account the possibility of a severe accident. The Department of Transport has specialist staff to assess the designs and movement of such flasks and issue the certificates of approval. The flasks used in the transport of fuel elements weigh about 50 tons each and the elements if removed improperly would be most dangerous to the remover, so that theft is most unlikely.
