HC Deb 21 January 1977 vol 924 c368W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children on the basis of projected birth rate trends she expects to enter the primary schools of the Greater Manchester Metropolitan County each year from 1978 to 1984.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Statistics are not available in a form that would permit reliable projections to be made of the number of pupils entering primary schools in a particular year. On the basis of the past trend in its share of the national total, the number of five year olds attending maintained primary schools in Greater Manchester is estimated to be about 40,000 in January 1978 and to decline to around 30,000 by January 1984.
