§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the cost of producing electricity by the AGRs at Hinkley Point and Hunterston; and how these figures compare with: (a) the most recently-built coal-fired power station and (b) the estimated cost of a coal-fired station incorporating current technology.
§ Mr. BennThe first reactors at Hinkley Point and Hunterston have been producing electricity for only about a year 281W and the second reactors have yet to reach full power. Comparison with other plant is therefore difficult. Experience so far suggests that the cost of generation from these two AGRs is comparable on an historic cost basis with that from our earlier nuclear stations. I am asking the Chairman of the Central Electricity Generating Board to write to the hon. Member further. Hunterston is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland who will ask the Chairman of the South of Scotland Electricity Board to write.
