HC Deb 19 January 1977 vol 924 cc241-2W
Mr. Fairgrieve

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are currently the numbers employed by Scottish local authorities; and what they were before reorganisation.

Mr. McElhone

On 11th September 1976 the total number of employees of Scottish local authorities was 293,468 made up of 223,318 full-time and 70,150 part-time staff. These figures are exclusive of 2,838 people employed by local authorities under the Goverment's Job Creation Scheme.

The nearest comparable figure before the reorganisation was approximately 261,000. A breakdown of this figure between full-time and part-time employees is not available. The present trend, over the period June to September 1976, is stability in the number of full-time employees and a decrease of about 3,000 in part-timers.
