HC Deb 25 February 1977 vol 926 c726W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what part of the country he expects to be covered by radioactive dust in the event of a nuclear strike on Great Britain; and if he plans immediate rescue work.

Mr. Moyle

The pattern and intensity of fallout will depend entirely on the nature and scale of nuclear attack and on weather conditions at the time. The best protection from fallout would be gained by staying under cover. Early attempts at rescue work before radioactivity had decayed would pose a serious danger to the operational services and to those they might seek to help.
