HC Deb 24 February 1977 vol 926 cc699-700W
Mr. James Lamond

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress has been made in carrying out the agreement in the Helsinki Final Act to study national and international measures to protect the environment, in particular rivers, lakes and seas, including the Mediterranean, with attention to the need to safeguard soil productivity and with due regard to the possible negative effects of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Mr. Shore

In addition to bilateral programmes, the current and future work programmes of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) provide for exchange of information and discussions on a wide range of environmental problems mentioned in the Final Act, including the protection of rivers, lakes, seas and soils, and its various committees take account of the contents of the Final Act when selecting projects for co-operation. A possible project which refers particularly to the Mediterranean is being discussed by the senior advisers to EEC Governments on environmental problems at their meeting in Geneva this week.
