asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the average cost in 1975–76 and the average estimated cost in 1976–77 of educating a child of (a) primary school and (b) secondary school age in England and Wales.

In the financial year 1975–76 the net institutional recurrent costs per pupil in primary and secondary schools were £263 and £404, respectively, at 1976 Survey prices. The estimated figures for the current financial year, at the same price level, are £269 and £398.
