Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in the Official Report the level of take-up by each district council within Strathclyde Region of funds available for mortgage loans during 1975–76 and 1976–77; and what application he has received for 1977–78.

The allocations for 1977–78 have yet to be announced. They are, however, not made in response to applications from individual authorities.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what has been the Scottish Office's allocation of funds to local authorities for the financing of mortgage loans in each of the past five years; and what is the projected level of such funds for the next financial year;

(2) if he is satisfied with the level of take-up by local authorities of funds made available for the financing of mortgage loans; and what surpluses or deficits, if any, there have been in each of the past five years.

Allocations for local authority lending for house purchase and improvement were introduced in 1975–76 and have been substantially taken up. The total funds available for lending in 1977–78will be included in the forthcoming White Paper on Public Expenditure Part II.
