§ Mr. Merlyn ReesThis money was paid in grants to local authorities under Section 11 of the Local Government Act 1966, in respect of staff specially employed because of the presence of substantial numbers of Commonwealth immigrants whose language and customs 583W differ from those of the rest of the community. The table below gives the breakdown.
A proportion of the grant claimed by a local authority is withheld pending certification of the claim by the district auditor. Consequently, the amount of grant shown in the Appropration Account includes any net balances paid on claims for prior years.
