§ Mr. Sproatasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average number of consecutive weeks for which 418W the average unemployed person got a tax rebate in 1975–76; and what was the average weekly amount.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonI regret that the information is not available in the form requested. Tax refunds for basic rate taxpayers depend on their tax allowances and the week of the tax year in which they become unemployed. The following figures show the approximate weekly rate of rebate which would have been received in 1975–76 by an unemployed person whose taxable income did not exceed the weekly equivalent of £4,500 a year, but who had paid sufficient tax during the year to qualify for the maximum rate of rebate:
Approximate weekly rate of rebate £ Single person 4.60 Married man 6.45 Married man with 1 child not over 11 8.10 Married man with 2 children not over 11 8.80 Married man with 3 children not over 11 9.55 Married man with 4 children not over 11 10.30
