§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will confirm that a consignment of 400,000 1b of tobacco now held in a bonded warehouse in Manchester originated from Rhodesia, and has been imported in defiance of United Nations sanctions; what action he proposes to take; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Robert Sheldon,pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 14th February 1977; Vol. 926, c. 100], gave the following information:
A quantity of tobacco, amounting to 370,518 lb, was seized on 15th July 1976 under Section 44(b) of the Customs and Excise Act 1952, on the ground that it had been imported contrary to the prohibition in Article 2(1) of the Southern Rhodesia (United Nations Sanctions) (No. 2) Order 1968 and Article 1 of the Import of Goods (Control) Order 1954. Notice of the action of seizure was given by publication in the London Gazette in accordance with paragraph 2(c) of the Seventh Schedule to the Customs and Excise Act 1952.
