HC Deb 21 February 1977 vol 926 cc490-1W
Mr. Crawford

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of motorway exist in England and Wales; how many are of the three-lane size; how many are of two-lane size; and how many have no hard shoulder.

Mr. Horam

1,272 miles of motorway in England are open to traffic. Of these, some 246 miles are at dual two-lane standard, the remainder being at dual three-lane standard. Hard shoulders are universally provided except where motorways are on or under structures which would make the cost of provision prohibitive.

Motorways in Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
