Dr. Reginald Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how long the Fareham Bail Hostel has been in use; where it is located; how many men are resident and for what average length of stay; what restrictions on their movements locally there are; and what are the most serious charges on which they are held at present.

Mr. John

Dickson House, 77, Trinity Street, Fareham, opened as a bail hostel in December 1974 and at present provides 11 places. The average length of stay of men on bail from magistrates' courts in three weeks and from Crown courts two-and-a-half months. Residents are encourage to find employment while at the hostel and there is no restriction on their movements, but they must be in the hostel by 11.30 p.m. The most serious charges in respect of which present residents are bailed are actual bodily harm and burglary.
