Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what total estimate he has made of the cost of running his Department and all other bodies for which he has responsibility in 1977–78, including all wages, pension, heating, lighting, rates, telephones, maintenance and all other costs whatsoever.

Mr. Orme

It is estimated that for 1977–78 the total administration cost of running the Department and the social security scheme, including superannuation and supporting services provided by other Government Departments, will be of the order of £710 million.
