HC Deb 17 February 1977 vol 926 cc344-5W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will ensure that imported goods are clearly and indelibly marked individually with their country of origin in England.

Mr. John Fraser

The Trade Descriptions Acts 1968 and 1972 aim to protect consumers against misleading indications of the origin of imported goods by prohibiting the importation and supply of goods bearing false indications of origin and the supply of imported goods bearing a United Kingdom name or mark, unless accompanied by a conspicuous indication of the country of manufacture. I have no other powers to require origin marking, except where this appears necessary or expedient in the interest of persons to whom the goods are supplied.
