HC Deb 17 February 1977 vol 926 cc367-9W
Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will ensure that adequate finance is available for the early implementation of flood prevention measures at the Meadows Estate, Llandudno Junction.

Mr. Strang

The necessary capital allocation will be made to the Welsh National Water Development Authority. A decision on grant aid will be taken shortly.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether a remedial scheme to prevent flooding at the Meadows Estate, Llandudno Junction has been presented to him for grant aid; if so, when it was presented; and to what extent it will qualify for grant.

Mr. Strang

A scheme was submitted to my Department on 1st February. A decision on grant aid will be made within a few days.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied with the arrangements for preparing and implementing flood prevention schemes in Wales by the river diversions of the Welsh National Water Development Authority and the Gwynedd River Board in particular and the Local Land Drainage Committee.

Mr. Strang

Yes.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will now secure the early implementation of the flood prevention scheme, devised for the Meadows Estate, Llandudno Junction, and name target dates for the start and completion of the project;

(2) what action he is able to take in connection with remedial works to prevent flooding on the Meadows Estate at Llandudno Junction; and whether he is satisfied that his powers are adequate to deal with such situations.

Mr. Strang

The responsibility and statutory powers for dealing with flooding on this estate are vested in the Welsh National Water Development Authority. My Department is ready to give advice and assistance, but decisions about the implementation of the remedial work and its timing are matters for the Authority.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture and Food if he will investigate the delay in preparing and implementing a flood protection scheme for the Meadows Estate, Llandudno Junction, after severe flooding twice in October and in view of the likelihood of further flooding.

Mr. Strang

No. I am satisfied that, having regard to the difficulties involved, the Welsh National Water Development Authority has acted expeditiously.
