asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the present pupil-teacher ratio for primary schools in the metropolitan borough of Stockport.

Miss Margaret Jackson

In January 1976, the latest date for which information is available, the average pupil-teacher ratio in maintained primary schools in Stockport was 27 to 1.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will recommend to local education authorities a standard formula for calculating pupil-teacher ratios.

No. I have already asked local authorities to maintain in 1977–78 their current staffing ratios.

Mr. Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list for each local education authority in England and Wales the ratios of teachers, full-time equivalent, to pupils in maintained nursery, primary, and secondary schools on 30th September 1976.

This information is collected by my Department as at January each year. Information for January 1977 is still being collected. Pupil-teacher ratios for each local education authority in England and Wales for January 1976 were published by my Department on 16th December and are available in the Library.
