HC Deb 15 February 1977 vol 926 c143W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present strength of the Greater Manchester police force; and whether he is satisfied with the level of its establishment.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

On 31st January 1977 the strength was 6,237. The establishment of 6,600, fixed when the force was created on 1st April 1974, was increased to 6,735 in September 1976 to allow for the additional responsibility of policing Manchester Airport. Other adjustments are likely to be needed in the light of three years' experience in policing Greater Manchester, and the ority may make as a result of this review, Chief Constable is reviewing the whole establishment with this in mind. I will consider any proposals the police authbut, subject to this, I am satisfied with the present establishment.
