Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many copies of each evening newspaper published in the North-West of England are purchased by his Department to keep himself and senior civil servants informed of regional news and opinions;

(2) how many copies of each weekly and bi-weekly newspaper published within Greater Manchester are purchased by his Department to keep himself and senior civil servants informed of regional news and opinion;

(3) how many copies of the following newspapers are purchased by his Department in order to keep himself and senior civil servants informed of public opinion and how many copies of each paper purchased are northern editions: The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, the Daily Mirror, The Times, the Financial Times, the Yorkshire Post and the Birmingham Post.

The Department buys the following newspaper for use at Head-quarters:

Local evening newspapers published in North-West England
Lancashire Evening Telegraph 1 copy
Liverpool Echo 1 copy
Manchester Evening News 3 copies
Weekly and bi-weekly newspapers published in Greater Manchester
Oldham Chronicle 1 copy
Wythenshaw Express 1 copy
National daily newspapers
The Guardian 25*
Daily Telegraph 15
Daily Mail 14 All London editions
Daily Express 13
Daily Mirror 16
The Times 31
Financial Times 38
Yorkshire Post 2
Birmingham Post 3
* Including 1 Manchester edition.

In addition the central offices at Blackpool and the local offices buy their own local newspapers to keep themselves and Ministers informed of appropriate regional matters.
