HC Deb 15 February 1977 vol 926 cc191-2W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence for what purposes the American and West German Governments may use Chobham armour free of charge; and, in particular, whether they would be required to make a payment to the United Kingdom if the armour was used to equip the tanks in their front line units.

Dr. Gilbert

I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer on this subject on 11th November 1976. In accordance with the standard arrangements between the United Kingdom and the United States for the interchange of defence information no payment would be required from the United States should it equip its own forces with a tank with Chobham armour. The Federal Republic of Germany has been supplied with information solely in connection with joint studies for the future main battle tank. The use of this information for other purposes by the Federal Republic of Germany forces would require further negotiation between Her Majesty's Government and the Federal Republic of Germany.
