HC Deb 14 February 1977 vol 926 cc56-7W
Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science by what proportion teacher training places in England, north of the Tyne, are being reduced in her latest proposals; and what is the comparative figure for the Northern Region south of the Tyne.

Mr. Oakes

Approximately 77 per cent. and 55 per cent. respectively.

Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will make a statement as to her proposals to replace the in-service teacher training provision at St. Mary's, Fenham, in the event of the college being closed.

Mr. Oakes

My right hon. Friend's proposals assume that, of the 45,000 places provided nationally, 10,000 will be available for in-service training. Application of this proportion locally would represent some 200 places for in-service training in Newcastle and 670 in the North Region. The detailed arrangements, including any supplementation of provision within the institutions by such means as local authority advisory services, would be a matter for consideration by the local education authorities in consultation with the teacher training institutions and universities.
