HC Deb 14 February 1977 vol 926 cc71-2W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many beef cows there are in Wales; what were the corresponding figures for the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Morris

According to the June Agricultural Census results the number of beef cows in Wales in 1976 and each of the five previous years was as follows:

1971 179,326
1972 189,783
1973 206,293
1974 228,854
1975 220,475
1976 205,927
(Provisional)

Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he has any plans to help beef calf rearers in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Morris

There is a strong demand at present for store cattle and calves, and prices at Welsh markets have been generally firm for some months. I expect this situation to continue.
