HC Deb 11 February 1977 vol 925 c880W
Mr. Cormack

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is satisfied that the arrangements for the acceptance of historic houses and works of art in satisfaction of capital transfer tax works prompty and effectively bearing in mind the public anxiety concerning the future of Mentmore Towers and its contents.

Mr. Joel Barnett,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 10th February 1977; Vol. 925], gave the following information:

Yes, though I should point out that Mentmore Towers has not been offered in satisfatcion of tax and that the offer, now under consideration, of a number of items from the Mentmore collection relates to estate duty, not to capital transfer tax.
