HC Deb 10 February 1977 vol 925 cc753-4W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will give the date of the introduction of a pension scheme for teachers and university lecturers; and whether provision was made for those who had completed 10 years of service before the introduction of the scheme.

Mr. Oakes

The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) was introduced on 1st April 1975. Any university staff who were then members of the Federated Superannuation System for Universities—which was established in 1913—or certain other schemes may until 5th April 1980 elect to transfer to USS. There is no minimum qualifying period. Superannuation arrangements for teachers in schools have existed for more than 100 years.
