§ Mr. Draysonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local authorities have asked for permission to relax their smokeless fuel orders, in view of the high price of smokeless fuel and of the problems which this presents to retirement pensioners.
§ Mr. Denis HowellOne local authority, Craven DC, has requested permission to suspend the operation of smoke control in its area. My right hon. Friend, after careful consideration, has refused his consent. In doing so, while having regard to the cost of solid smokeless 767W fuel, he also took into account its greater efficiency as a heating agent compared with ordinary coal, which means that it need not be burnt in the same quantities. He also had regard to the benefits of smoke control in terms of improved public health and amenity.
