HC Deb 09 February 1977 vol 925 cc732-3W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many cases of British subjects being called up for military service by the illegal Rhodesian régime since 1965 have come to the notice of Her Majesty's Government.

Mr. Rowlands

Although they have no knowledge of the numbers involved, Her Majesty's Government are aware that many British subjects, born or resident in Rhodesia, are held by the illegal régime to be liable to conscription into that country's armed forces.

Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the total number of prosecutions that have occurred since 1965 for aiding the illegal Rhodesian régime; in how many cases prison sentences have been imposed; how many fines have been imposed for breach of sanctions; and in how many cases a prosecution has ended in acquittal.

Mr. Rowlands

There have been 25 prosecutions for matters relating to sanctions against Rhodesia, 22 of which have been successful. Fines were imposed in all the latter cases.
