The provision in the 1976–77 main Estimates for Civil Service remuneration is £2,619 million, and for pensions and general administrative expenditure—postage, telephones, travel, subsistence, etc.—is £1,034 million. The annual average per civil servant of500W these costs is about £4,900. It is not possible without incurring disproportionate expense to identify the average cost per head of the Civil Service of items such as accommodation, heating, lighting and stationery whose cost is borne on allied service Votes.
