Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many liquidations of private companies and of individual bankruptcies of self-employed persons, respectively, there were in the years 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The available statistics for the United Kingdom are as follows:

Company liquidations of private companies*
Total Of which, members' voluntary liquidations Bankruptcies of self-employed persons
1973 7,232 4,554 2,582
1974 7,840 3,971 3,564
1975 9,757 4,156 4,853
1976 10,718 4,397 3,013‡

I will publish the total figure for bankruptcies of self-employed persons in 1976 when it becomes available.

* The total company liquidations comprises compulsory liquidations and creditors' voluntary liquidations, in which the company is insolvent, and members' voluntary liquidations, in which the company is not insolvent. The figures are for liquidations begun during each year.

† The total of receiving orders and administration orders made, less rescissions before the end of the year, in England and Wales, sequestration orders made in Scotland, and adjudication orders, protection orders and administration orders made in Northern Ireland. These three sets of figures are broadly comparable.

‡ First three quarters.
