HC Deb 04 February 1977 vol 925 c472W
Mr. Macfarlane

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the minimum qualification for entry into colleges of art; and what has been the number of students in these colleges for each of the past 10 years.

Mr. Oakes

There is no national minimum qualification; requirements vary according to the type of course which the individual student seeks to follow.

The total number of students enrolled in colleges of art in England and Wales in November of each of the past 10 years is as follows:

1966 118,845
1967 117,658
1968 127,835
1969 118,089
*1970 108,200
1971 90,472
1972 61,034
1973 56,062
1974 54,195
1975 48,722
*The decline in numbers in this and succeeding years mirrors the absorption of a number of colleges of art into polytechnics.
