HC Deb 03 February 1977 vol 925 cc319-21W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many firms in Wales are receiving, or have made application to receive, temporary employment subsidy;

(2) what is the total value of the temporary employment subsidy currently being paid to firms in Wales;

(3) what estimate he has made of the total amount of temporary employment subsidy which will be paid to firms in Wales in the next 12 months.

Mr. Golding

As at 28th January, 220 firms in Wales had applied for the temporary employment subsidy and 169 of these, covering 12,000 workers, had been approved. Forty-two applications, covering 1,974 workers, were pending. The estimated gross cost in subsidy, including future commitment on these approved applications and assuming 12 months payment in each case, is £11.4 million. It is not possible to make a realistic estimate of future take-up of expenditure as this depends on the number and size of companies that decide to apply and satisfy the condition.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of firms currently receiving regional employment premium in Wales will be, in his estimation, entitled to claim temporary employment subsidy.

Mr. Golding

I regret it is not possible to make an estimate. If a company wishes to apply for TES it may succeed only if it agrees to defer an impending redundancy affecting 10 or more workers in an establishment and satisfies also the other conditions of the scheme.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what estimate he has made of the number of male, female and juvenile jobs currently being saved by payments of temporary employment subsidy to firms in Wales;

(2) what estimate he has made of the number of male, female and juvenile jobs which have been saved in Wales as a result of awards of temporary employment subsidy.

Mr. Golding

The total number of jobs that have been saved in Wales as a result of awards of temporary employment subsidy is estimated as:

Males (Over 21) 5,700
Females (Over 21) 5,000
Young People (Under 21) 1,200
Total 11,900

As at 28th January the number of jobs curently being saved in Wales is estimated as:

Males (Over 21) 5,450
Females (Over 21) 4,770
Young People (Under 21) 1,160
Total 11,380
