Mr. Fitt

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many households in Northern Ireland are having, rent arrears deducted from social security payments.

Mr. Carter

A 10 per cent. sample of benefit allocation cases at 3rd January 1977 shows that a total of 5,680 households in Northern Ireland are having rent arrears deducted from social security benefits.

Mr. Fitt

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many parents/guardians have had family allowance withheld by benefit allocations to pay rent arrears to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Mr. Carter

A sample survey of 10 per cent. of benefit allocation cases at 3rd January 1977 shows that a total of 2,690 parents/guardians are having deductions made to pay rent arrears to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Mr. Fitt

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the maximum amount which has been deducted by benefit allocations from a claimant's benefit to pay rent arrears to the Housing Executive.

Mr. Carter

The amount deducted weekly from a claimant's benefit to pay rent arrears is based on the following formula:

Claimant £1.55
Spouse 90p
Each child 75p
up to a maximum of £5. Where an earnings related supplement is in payment, or where the claimant is employed, the maximum is £6.

Mr. Fitt

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons in receipt of supplementary benefit have had rent arrears deducted by benefit allocations.

Mr. Carter

A sample survey of 10 per cent. of benefit allocation cases at 3rd January 1977 shows that a total of 1,180 persons are having rent arrears deducted from supplementary benefits.
