HL Deb 03 February 1977 vol 379 cc1025-6WA
Lord RENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which Departments of State have legal advisers, with experience in international law; and what provisions are made for those that may not have such advisers, but may need advice on international legal matters urgently, as for instance MAFF, DAFS or the Ministry of Defence, in the conduct of fishery protection operations.

The LORD PRIVY SEAL (Lord Peart)

The legal advisers to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are specialists in all aspects of public international law, and their advice is readily available to other Departments. Other departmental legal advisers have experience in the particular fields of international law affecting the matters with which their Departments are concerned. In the example mentioned by my noble friend, the three Departments and their legal advisers are in close touch with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as necessary.
