HL Deb 01 February 1977 vol 379 c841WA
Lord CRAIGTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many venomous reptiles were imported into the United Kingdom, of which species, and from which countries, during the last year for which figures are available.

Baroness BIRK

I regret that import figures relating to venomous reptiles are not available. However, the two known species of venomous lizard, the Gila monster and the Beaded lizard are subject to import controls under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. No specimens were imported during 1976, although licences have been granted for the import of 20 of each species from the United States of America. Imports of venomous snakes are not subject to control, as no such species is listed in the Appendices to the Convention.
