§ 49. Mr. McNamaraasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will make a statement on the unemployment situation in the Hull travel-to-work area.
§ Mr. GoldingIn the period between October 1976 and January 1977 total 157W unemployment in the Hull travel to work area showed a very small decrease. While this is to be welcomed, I accept that the area's high rate of unemployment remains a cause of grave concern. The Government are committed to reducing unemployment and have taken a number of measures to alleviate its worst effects. The Hull area has benefited from these. So far, over 3,500 people have been assisted there by means of the job creation and work experience programmes, the temporary employment subsidy, the recruitment subsidy and youth employment subsidy schemes, and the job release scheme.
