asked the Secretary of State for Energy what use has been made to date of the Petroleum (Production) (Amendment) Regulations 1976/276 relating to non-invited applications in respect of a seaward area; and how many licences have been granted to the British National Oil Corporation or the British Gas Corporation covering areas to which private sector companies have not access.

Ten licences, in response to non-invited applications have been granted, including one to Hydrocarbons Great Britain Ltd., a subsidiary of the British Gas Corporation. The answer to the latter part of the Question is "None".
