HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 c437W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received from the British Safety Council about the need to activate paragraph 6 of Schedule 3 to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) why he has not invoked paragraph 6 of Schedule 3 to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure only trained safety officers operate in British companies;

(2) if it is the Government's policy that all companies should employ trained safety officers; and when he expects this will come about.

Mr. John Grant

I have received several representations from the British Safety Council relating to the qualifications of safety officers.

The question of the employment training and qualifications of safety officers is still under consideration by the Health and Safety Commission, following its discussion document on the subject published by the Health and Safety Executive in 1976, and all these questions will be considered in their review of the subject.
