HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc568-9W
Mr. John Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he intends to introduce any new systems of fog warning at an early date; and if he will make a statement on the various fog warning systems in operation and at the experimental stage.

Mr. Horam

Over the motorway system generally, police-controlled signals are used to warn drivers of hazards, including fog, on the road ahead. My right hon. Friend recently announced that he proposed to install a more advanced motorway signalling system on the eastern approach to the Severn Bridge. It will be linked with automatic fog detectors which have been tested on the MI and M4 motorways. Experiments are also being carried out into ways of communicating to drivers the nature of hazards on motorways.
